Thank you for the wonderfull course and meditations. I just did the one on the self with the five aggregates but I sort of got stuck on the part about awareness. In what I experienced the open space of the mind could not be broken up into pieces or boxes. There is no shape, form or substance to do anything with. It feels like emptiness wthout form or content in wchich everything else appears. At that level there is also no time to be broken up into pieces. It feels like only now. Memories of earlier moments can appear there but that is different from the now experence of the open space of mind. In the experience of the open space of mind, time feels more like an illusion. So at that point of the meditation I could not negate myself. Although the self I experienced did not feel like a personal self and defenitely not seperated from anything else in the world. How can I interpret this from Bhuddhist Philosophy or teaching?

    Kind regards,
    Mark

    Hi Mark,

Thanks so much for writing: it is very nice to read how this meditation brought you to the different insights you’ve described.

In terms of your question, there’s no ‘right or wrong’ here – only the experience of meditation that will differ from person to person. It seems to me that what you describe and experienced during this analytical meditation actually brought you the insight that was the motivation behind adding this meditation to the course: the insight that there is no independently existing self. So actually, by observing what this meditation brought you and what you couldn’t do, although you tried to follow the instructions, has led you to the same insight: you say that you definitely did not feel separated from anything else in the world. This latter point is key!

I hope this helps somewhat, and that it will give you the confidence to keep on using this meditation for your own benefit and that of others!

Enjoy the course, with best wishes,

    Sajda
